アパート Apart
Generally constructed of wood, or light steel framework. Usually, an apartment complex has 3 stories or less.
マンション Mansion
Made of steel framework and reinforeced concrete and it has more than 3 stories.
Rent is normally higher than an apart. This means an apartment or a flat in English.
一戸建て
Ikkodate or Kashiya
This means a house on loan.

1 DK
A 1DK has a bed room and a kitchen combined with a dining room. This size of the room is a little bit larger than a 1ROOM or 1k.
1 LDK
In a 1LDK, the bed room and living room are separate. The common size of the room is 40m2-60m2.
1 SLDK
A 1SLDK is a 1LDK room with a closet which has enough space to walk into.
* 1 means one bed room. A 2LDK has two bed room, a living room, a kitchin combined with a dining room, a bath and a toilet.

Tatami
This is a traditional Japanese flooring made of plant called Igusa(rush) which is knitted together. Please remember Tatami mats of Judo.The scent of Igusa is noted for its soothing properties. Tatami provides excellent insulation, so rooms with Tatami flooring feel cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Tatami flooring is also effective for soundproofing.

This type of flooring is made of wood. The appearance is very clean and bright but scratches easily and offers little soundproofing.
クッション・フロアーCu shioned floor
The surface is covered with plastic, it does have the advantage of being waterproof. This is soft and week if there is a fire.
カーペット
Carpet
This is effective in soundproofing and looks nice, but rental rooms with carpet are very rare. Because it soils easily and is attracting ticks in the summer.
